Kwinana Health Statistics

Yesterday I blogged about a Cancer Support Association of WA newsletter outlining health stats in the US, today let's look at some stats recorded in Kwinana over the past 10 years or so.

An increase in cancer incidence in Kwinana was predicted by the WA Cancer Registry; Dr. Tim Threlfall in 1997
(“Increase in cancer numbers predicted” Sound Telegraph July 9 1997) (Cancer Incidence and Mortality Projections in WA 1996-2001).

‘87%excess of lung cancer in females in Kwinana’
WA Cancer Registry Report for 1998 - 2002;
“Lung cancer in Kwinana Females 87% higher than the state average”

"The only trend identified in Kwinana is an 87 per cent higher rate of lung cancers among women, which health authorities say is likely to be linked to smoking habits" The postcodes that come with cancer. The West Australian page 1. Tuesday, October 5 2001; This claim of smoking is solely to blame was proven to be false.

"Incidents of lung cancer in females between 1998 and 2002 was 87% higher than the state average".
Town of Kwinana Minutes; ordinary council meeting November 10, 2004, Item 17.1, page CL41 . Report to Council - Cancer Statistics;

“There is a statistically significant excess of cancer in the Rockingham/Kwinana area”. Dr Keith Woollard October 2001

There was no excess of cancer in the Kwinana population prior to 1995 and the timing of the development of an excess rate of cancer seems to fit nicely with the proceeding dramatic increase in pollution from the strip” Dr Keith Woollard 20th January 2004.

The male death rate from cancer in Rockingham/Kwinana was 25 per cent above the state average Health Department figures show” West Australian Wednesday March 6 2002 page 7; data from cancer registry information released to the west but refused to the community.

42% excess of cancer in Hope Valley Wattleup – Cancer registry data.
The DOH finally agreed to provide cancer statistics for the Wattleup and Hope Valley area. This information pointed out correctly, that the population numbers where too small to allow any firm conclusions to be made on that data alone. Nonetheless, they were entirely consistent with the cancer data from the large population groups in Kwinana and Rockingham. Among those population groups, there was a statistically significant excess of cancer. Furthermore, the incident data going back over the last decade then showed that this excess of cancer (in comparison with the rest of the state) only appeared since 1995.

“Health Department figures show a substantial excess of Juvenile cancers in the Rockingham Kwinana area”
Dr. Keith Woollard September 2002.

Deaths from cancer in particular where 17.9% higher than Perth per year on average, and 15.3% higher than Australia by average. November 2005, Population Health Profile of the Rockingham Kwinana Division of General Practice, University of Adelaide; In October 2006, we became aware (by finding it on the www) of this report commissioned by the Federal Government and carried out by the University of Adelaide. This report further confirmed our fears by showing more deaths from chronic illnesses including cancer and respiratory disease etc in Rockingham/Kwinana division of general practice area than in Perth and the rest of the country on average.

A DOH study on hospitalisation rates in Rockingham Kwinana in 2005 Found “An excess of hospitalisations for cardiovascular disease for residents of Kwinana”; “A significant excess of hospitalisation for respiratory disease including Asthma for residents of Kwinana”; An excess of hospitalisations for urinary problems for residents of Kwinana; and that “Kwinana has a significantly younger population than the state”.
(We do not currently have a copy of this report, but it should be available from DOH).

So although Kwinana has the youngest population in the State, it is suffering more health problems than the State averages.

A Health Survey of Cockburn, Kwinana and Rockingham, Department of Health WA; September 2004, ‘The study you carry out when you don’t want to find a problem’. Nonetheless the figures did show an excess in heart disease in both men and women in Kwinana.

“The results are a further confirmation of the likely toxicity of industrial pollution from the Kwinana industrial strip”.

“As demonstrated from major overseas studies, people exposed to industrial pollution have higher rates of heart disease and cancer”

Please Note: Some of the above figures include Rockingham data as well as Kwinana as joint Rockingham/Kwinana studies were carried out. We suspect that the Kwinana rates alone, in the cases above, would be even higher.

According to our authorities these stats have no link whatsover to industrial pollution, however they provide no true evidence to back that claim. In fact just the opposite. And continue to ignore our calls for an full environmental health study.

We have seen in other countries such as the US and UK excess cancer rates of 5% higher in a community than the average triggers whole of Government responses.

One does not have to reason as to why they do this - the answer is simple - If you don't look properly you won't find a problem.

In my view another example of protect industry at any cost.

The main reason for a Kwinana Incinerator

This article appeared in our local media, in which the Town of Kwinana and Kwinana Industry make some rather strange claims and admissions.

Kwinana Council and Kwinana Industry claim our group did not stop a previous incinerator proposal in Kwinana which we fought for 4 years. Just why do they think that no other council would sign contracts to supply waste for this incinerator proposal?

The Mayor of Kwinana then claims "nearly an hour of the presentation time was hijacked by both Ms Bremmer and Mr Hesse". Wait a minute, it was our meeting,
we are entitled to speak at our own meeting. Or is it a case of if anyone has a differing view than the the Town of Kwinana or our Mayor then they should not be heard? I hope not because that sounds like a dictatorship to me.

Interestingly Kwinana Industry made some alarming admissions confirming as we suspected that hazardous/toxic wastes from industry would also be used. This is the reason Kwinana Industry want an incinerator in Kwinana; to use ratepayers funds to provide a way of hiding their toxic wastes.

"Hide the evidence of dirty and unsustainable industries. Incinerators allow dirty industries to get rid of their toxic waste and hide the impacts of their practices. These industries depend on incineration to fuel our continued use of this system of unsustainable production and consumption"

Here is the article on our response to Town of Kwinana and Kwinana Industry claims:

This is a letter of response from ACE:
Claims made by KIC director Chris Oughton and Kwinana Town Council’s Mayor, Carol Adams, in the Sound Telegraphs recent article 2/3/11, reveals their ignorance about incinerator technologies and shows that they did not understand the presentation by leading world expert on waste Dr Paul Connett at a recent public forum organised by the Alliance for a Clean Environment.
To suggest that our organisation could “hijack” their own forum which ACE provided to inform the community about the health, environment and other financial risks associated with incinerator technology, when the KIC and ToK have not, is a childish remark designed to divide and conquer host communities who have legitimate rights to access information about what might affect their health and their children’s future. To imply that providing community right to know is somehow a terrorist act, is simply gutter politics. ACE was inundated with many congratulations and offers of support from numerous people who attended the Kwinana forum and also the other successful forums that were held in Midland and at the Conservation Council of WA. Successful presentations were also made to the EPA, the DEC and the Waste Authority of WA and to a number of State parliamentarians during Dr Connett’s 10 day speaking tour hosted by ACE in Feb.
Even though there will always be those sections of government and community who do not want to be reminded of the regulatory failures that have happened in this state or of the comparatively poor environmental and health standards we have, it is no less of an interest to the community, especially those that will be hosting such toxic facilities.
Clearly Chris Oughton and Carol Adams, did not understand the science related to combustion and nano-particles as presented by Dr Connett. To suggest that toxic coal fly ash would be a suitable fuel source for MSW incinerators reveals this ignorance and displays a disturbing lack of regard for human health protection in their own community, which is already disproportionately affected by industrial pollution. Combustion processes create dangerous nano-particles that can pass directly into human blood, organs and brain yet are not regulated for environmental or human health protection in Australia.
Fly ash is the concentrated toxic waste gathered from combustion processes. Coal fly ash has been associated with radioactivity (see attached) and will contain hazardous mercury and dioxin wastes. To use this waste as a fuel source immediately makes any such proposal hazardous. Clearly this incinerator proposal is about providing waste disposal options for other toxic industries, such as the coal industry and has nothing to do with addressing the problems of municipal waste in WA, including our appalling recycling rates. Incinerator technologies destroy valuable resources that could be recycled and reused and does not create enough energy to be viable, economically or environmentally.
The KIC and ToK need to come clean on their plans to establish a hazardous waste incinerator in Kwinana. Passing off a hazardous waste incinerator as anything less, is misleading and offensive to the community and is not an honest way of pursuing the necessary government approvals. ACE will be watching closely and ensuring the truth about this proposal is made available to the public and that toxic waste incinerators do not establish here in WA.
WA citizens deserve better waste management than these sort of expensive, out dated, end of pipe, solutions that are known to leave toxic legacies for centuries. While Chris Oughton and Carol Adam’s comments seem nasty and adversarial towards legitimate public interest ngo’s, it is however not surprising that such tactics are being employed at a local government level in a town that is heavily dominated by industry representation.
It is beyond time that the Town of Kwinana and Kwinana Industry came clean with this community.

The truth about Incineration

Reminder: International expert on waste Professor Paul Connett will explain why a Kwinana Incinerator is such a bad idea:

Don't be fooled by the Greed. Don't be fooled that there are no health problems related to pollution in Kwinana. Don't be fooled that wind does not blow pollution into Kwinana. Don't be fooled by those dirty industries looking for a quick fix to their waste problem at ratepayers expense. Don't be fooled - come along and hear the truth.

Kwinana warned of incinerator 'crime'

Hello all, I have been otherwise occupied of late, so am playing catch up now. Thank you all for staying tuned.

The visit by US incineration expert Dr Paul Connett went well, but it seems those that will make the decisions, once again didn't and probably just won't get the message, so the battle will continue.

Dr Connett was brought to WA by ACE WA in association with the Kwinana Watchdog Group supported by the Kwinana Progress Association.

Here is a local media article on the Kwinana Presentation by Dr. Paul Connett:

Clean Incineration is a Dirty Lie

The Mayor and CEO of Kwinana Council are off on another Junket, this time allegedly 'to look at impacts of incinerators' in Japan. It is little wonder Kwinana's rates are rising more than most other councils in recent years. Yes a town that has been proven the most disadvantaged community in Perth yet our rates have risen more than most councils in Australia.

If Kwinana Council has it's way plans to mass burn waste including waste streams from other councils and industries will see Kwinana become the host community for a toxic incineration industry. Dangerous chemicals such as Dioxins, Mercury and other by-products of incineration will add further risks to the health of the Kwinana community, who already suffer the disproportionate impacts from heavy polluting industry on the Kwinana industrial strip.

One would have thought that the Kwinana Council would have learned something during the early 2000's when the council proposed another incinerator project, after much community angst and protest the then awake state labor government put a stop to the project.

A growing body of independent science and health professionals recognise the increased cancer, respiratory disease and cardiovascular disease points to the large number of high risk polluting industries operating on the Kwinana industrial strip but sadly our Council still has its head buried in the sand and continues to ignore and downplay the risk.

Claims that industrial pollution is not a problem in Kwinana "because the wind does not blow pollution into residential areas can have no validity based on common sense, scientific data and the bureau of meteorology wind patterns. This claim is just another lie developed by those wanting to protect industry.

Corporate spin about the benefits of waste to energy (incineration) plants as a reliable and effective waste management option are being challenged all over the world leaving Kwinana the bastion for misinformation about 'silver bullet solutions' and 'end of pipe policy' and decision making.

The claim by Kwinana Council that an incinerator would lower rates is bizarre, history suggests that the opposite would be more the case.

The failure of Kwinana Council to respect its constituents and provide community engagement on such high risk proposals, shows an alarming level of contempt towards its own residents and leaves an impression that there is an intention to manipulate and control the outcomes of any decision making in relation to the Towns waste management. These decisions require full community engagement as has been recognised by most other WA local governments who are establishing recourse recovery facilities around the state.

There is a reason nowhere else in Australia has a incinerator and that is because communities around Australia have rejected and continue to reject dangerous incineration as a waste treatment option.

Tiwest update

Udate: Pictures of Tiwest Titanium Dioxide emissions added to 'another worker affected at Tiwest' blog.

"Titanium Dioxide (Ti02) has been listed as an IARC-2B carcinogen. They have proven that ultra fine particles (dust) of Titanium Dioxide causes cancer in animals. Insufficient research has been done on the effects of Ti02 on humans."
