BHPbilliton Asbestos Risk

One could be forgiven for thinking that these pictures are from a industrial operation in a 3rd world country or an abandoned operation in outback Australia - No, the pictures are of BHPbilliton Kwinana Nickel Refinery the worlds 3rd largest producer of Nickel.

In 2004 this shed was declared a no go zone because of the danger, all these years later and despite complaints from members of the community BHPbilliton and our authorities have done nothing to rectify this situation.

It really is a shame that such a BIG AUSTRALIAN and the worlds largest mining company can't even afford to replace some asbestos on a shed., or is it a case of BHPbilliton just doesn't really care enough to bother spending money to do the right thing by the local community and workers?

BHP Refuses to release spill information

Nearly a year ago BHPbilliton killed about 14 native trees and caused other environmental damage when the Kwinana Nickel Refinery line to the Baldivis ponds ruptured.

Since then we have frequently asked BHP for a copy of the report on the incident. BHP simply ignored our requests until early June when I brought the issue up again at a EIP meeting, BHP then promised we would have an answer in writing by the end of June. Finally on 30th July I received a response in writing - trouble is that response doesn't really say a lot but it seems BHP is not going to release this report to us.

It is hard to swallow BHPbillitons claims in its company charter and as used in its public advertising:
"We have an overriding commitment to health, safety, environmental responsibility and sustainable development - To earn the trust of the community we must be forthright in our communications and consistently deliver on commitments - We are successful when the communities in which we operate value out citizenship".

The Kwinana Nickel Refinery has long operated as a secret service, even when it was previously owned by WMC I recall another refusal to release a report on the mass arsenic contamination in groundwater under the refinery, in the end the story of refusal to release the report hit the West Australian and the report was made public:

Just what does BHPbilliton have to hide?

What ever happened to 'community right to know?

People from Kwinana also involved in US lawsuit

It should be pointed out that the 240 plantiffs involved in the US lawsuit against Alcoa are not only people from Wagerup but also include some of those allegedly affected by Kwinana and Pinjarra Refineries.

I do not understand why this continues to be kept out of the public?

Maybe someone can elighten me?

WA residents file massive US lawsuit against Alcoa

As per the email alert I sent out the night before last, this is big news:

"RESIDENTS living near Alcoa's Wagerup alumina refinery have filed a massive US lawsuit - led by health crusader Erin Brockovich."

See the story on TribLive, Perthnow, theWest,

The Australian law firm involved are Shine Lawyers here.

Update 13-06-09:

Alcoa deceived locals from the start, US writ alleges:

"Lawyer William Caroselli said Alcoa had put its bottom line and making money ahead of the safety of the environment and the public's health.

``As a result of their (Alcoa's) negligence and recklessness there are a lot of sick people who, through no fault of their own, are fated to lives full of illness, pain, and suffering. We intend to hold Alcoa accountable,'' Mr Caroselli told The Sunday Times".

Perfluorochemicals in Biosolids

Are perfluorochemicals widespread in biosolids?

"“We are finding that, for perfluorochemicals, they are showing up where we didn’t expect them to be. The levels vary, but these seem to be universal chemicals that are showing up everywhere,” Hora adds.

EPA recently completed a survey of organic contaminants in sludge but did not measure perfluorochemicals. “When the study started, we didn’t have a method,” says Rudzinki. “We won’t be able to analyze those samples now because they are stored in Teflon containers,” she adds."

An interesting and credible journal article on the major data gaps that exist in relation to waste sludges (biosolids) and waste waste water treatment.

Who said a leopard can't change its spots

Well, after publishing this blog post about the Kwinana Child Health Study, this blog post about Kwinana air monitoring cuts, this blog post asking whether our Premier is a hypocrite , various media releases and articles, heated discussions at community-industry forums and becoming more and more depressed over the state of air monitoring in Kwinana and the effort we seemed to have had put into this issue over recent years...

I was today blown away, when the DEC told us they will monitor for Volotile Organic Compounds (VOC's) and Ammonia (NH3) as well as Particulates during the upcoming air toxics study air quality study
and to top it off, we will also get monitoring done in Medina - the suburb of Kwinana most at risk from the industrial pollution that doesn't exist.

Was I dreaming or is this reality?

Time will tell.

Ok I know...

I shouldn't make a whole blog post out of a comment on a previous blog but I just couldn't resist this classic about the industrial noise issue:
"how close are ya to this place? i drive past it about midnight every night to goto work and i cant hear them... and i had to look on google maps and parmelia is ages away. and seriously doubt they can hear the place from there.
are ya sure its not something a lot closer to where ya live?"
I am so, so tempted to let rip but I won't because I am so over support industry at any cost idiots who think they can hide behind anonymity but really just show us all they haven't got a clue.

More Mass Bird Deaths in Cockburn

The DEC are investigating mass bird deaths around the Henderson Landfill (rubbish tip). Over 200 dead birds have been found.

Unlike the previous Sea Gull deaths, a range of different bird species are affected this time.

I will update as further information becomes available.

UpDate 1: The story is reported on Perthnow

Update 2: A Pesticide (Ferithion) poisoned the birds. see ABC news.

Time to End the SMRC disgrace

This story on Perthnow highlights what we have been saying about SMRC for many years.
"WA MPs call for heads to roll over stinky waste report
Two state MPs are calling for heads to roll after a pollution study revealed a Canning Vale composting plant is releasing noxious odours.

Riverton MP Dr Mike Nahan and Member for Jandakot Joe Francis are calling for the South Metropolitan Regional Council (SMRC) chiefs to resign in wake of the damning report.

The MPs have accused chairman Doug Thompson and chief executive officer Stuart McAll of failing to act responsibly when dealing with odour issues which have plagued the community for years".
In my view, those Councillors in local councils like Kwinana, that have been involved should also go, and Kwinana Council should withdraw from SMRC as Canning Council did.

But that won't happen because I have no doubt that Kwinana council will continue to maintain the position that SMRC is wonderfull and continue to invest our money in the operation even though:
“In addition to addressing its pollution problem, the SMRC facility is facing serious financial difficulties. It hasn’t been financially viable for several years and its future is in serious question.”
Some of the history of, and links for SMRC are included in the blog post here.

Update: After years of denial and disgraceful treatment, even ridicule of the affected community, SMRC now CLAIMS to have found it's odour problem; see the story on inmycommunity

How well did you sleep?

Noise Is Pollution

Imagine a neighbour of yours playing music ALL night, or working in their shed ALL night using an electric saw, while you are trying to sleep. What would be done about it? Well if you complained the Police would be around to 1 inform the person to stop producing the noise and 2 if the noise continued would be back to confiscate the equipment producing the noise and 3 if the noise continued said person would probably be arrested and charged, because the community has laws to protect them against excessive noise.

Yet some residents of Kwinana have to put up with illegal levels of noise all night and nothing whatsoever is done, because our authorities must protect industry at any cost...

Take last night for example at my front door the level of noise was around 68db most of the night, the legal limit is 35db. I also received other complaints from as far inland as Parmelia. But will anything be done?

Yes, Kwinana Industries have started another noise reference group to keep the issue buried while they do nothing for another few years, and then are likely to once again attempt to con so called community reps and our regulators into validating another noise modelling report that could not be validated because of lack of actual monitoring...

Yes, it likely that our Kwinana Council will continue to FALSELY claim that Kwinana Industry are exempt from the noise regulations just so they don't have to get involved when they know full well that Kwinanna industry are NOT exempt from the law.

Yes, it is likely that our DEC will continue to DO NOTHING about the ILLEGAL levels of noise that we are exposed to, they won't even monitor the noise because that would provide evidence that the noise problem existed.

Yes, our EPA will continue to approve new noisy industry and allow existing industry already in breach to expand and will continue to make the FALSE claim that this will not add to cumulative noise levels.

Yes the big corporate giants like Wesfarmers and BP will continue to breach noise regulations and just not care because they know they will be protected by those who are paid to protect us from them.

Now try and tell me that corruption does not exist in Kwinana - If this isn't corruption then what is?

I have blogged about this issue before after all this has been going on for over 10 years, so if you feel like a depressing read go here, here, here and here.

We want noise monitoring not modelling... We want action to reduce the impact of cumulative industrial noise on our lives... We want our authorities to stop protecting industry at any cost, and to enforce the laws designed to protect us... Why is this too much to ask?

Greenwashing and the almighty Spin Machine

Today I stumbled upon a web site of publications - books and papers by Prof Sharon Beder and I'm glad I did, wow can I relate to a lot of what she says.

The web site states that "Sharon has written 10 books, around 150 articles, book chapters and conference papers (many available for download here), as well as designing teaching resources and educational websites".

As many of you would know; for many years my pet hates have revolved a lot around corporate spin doctoring, greenwashing and the like, Prof Beder has many publications on the topic.

Sharon also writes on one of my other hates incineration and a soon to be hot topic sewage treatment use and reuse..

Here is just a very small taste of one of the publications:
"Another way for corporations to show they care about the environment, even if they don’t care enough to make major changes to their business practices, is to donate money to an environmental group or to sponsor an environmental project. Such donations can also have the additional benefit of coopting and corrupting environmentalists. Consultancies and perks for individual environmentalists also work wonders for getting a favourable hearing"

Biowise Stinks

Biowise is an operation jointly owned by SITA and the WA Government through Water Corporation and composts sewage (Biosolids) from the nearby Kwinana waste water treatment plant.

Biowise has been of some concern in the community for many years, however it seems our council in particular the Environmental Health Department have been fully supportive of the operation.

During our campaign against the Rivers Regional Council proposal it became obvious that Biowise was having a negative effect on the amenity and livestyle of residents over a large area on the north side of Kwinana and on the Spectacles wet land situated imediately to the east of the operation. Odour often affected the community and the Spectacles area where tours are conducted. We have also recieved complaints of claimed health effects and of fly's breeding on the site.

It was claimed (and probably rightly so) that our local governemnt (Council) and state governement authorities where turning a blind eye to this operation - why is anyone's guess, but we are attempting to find out.

We recently learned that Biowise had applied (probably encouraged by our authorities) to the DEC to attempt to mask the odour by misting chemicals into the air.

We researched this proposal further and found that there was a history even in WA of the aplication of chemical in an attempt to control odour causing health problems. We learned that the product proposed to be used contained at least one chemical of real concern -
Nonyl phenol ethoxylate 9016-45-9

Alkylphenols (APs). Nonylphenols (NPs),octylphenols (OPs), and nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs) are used in plastics, industrial detergents and emulsifiers, and textile and carpet cleaning. Most can degrade back to alkylphenols, which are persistent and bio-accumulative, and have been found in umbilical-cord blood and breast milk. NPs have also been found in foods, rainwater, and house dust. Alkylphenols can mimic estrogen hormones and in test animals, and can alter sexual development in fish and sperm quality in mice. Low doses of nonylphenol have profoundly adverse effects on oysters. A single exposure during larval development to an environmentally-relevant dose of nonylphenol causes disruption of sexual development, and also lowers survival of offspring in the next generation. Exposed larvae are much more likely to develop as hermaphrodites, and the sex ratio is altered, with more females than expected. According to the scientists who conducted the research, exposure "may result in severe consequences, not only for natural populations but also for commercial hatcheries situated in areas where nonylphenol is present in the water
.

Obviously a chemical of concern to Human Health and to Fauna and surely should no be sprayed near people or in such close proximity to a major wetland.

We wrote to SITA asking them to withdraw the application to the DEC until a community consultative committee was set up to discuss the issue. They refused saying they would continue with the application but not install the system until the community had seen the details, which seems all too late.

One must question the spraying of chemicals into the air to mask an odour that should not be there in the first place. The cause should be addressed, for example most of the Biowise operation takes place out doors, not in enclosed sheds with scrubber systems to remove odour, no lining on the ground and no bunds.

Sigh... Looks like we have a long way to go with this one, time to ramp up the campaign.
Hello All,

Yes I have been a slack little blogger for the last month, thank you all those of stayed around waiting for me to get re motivated, and thank you to those of you who reminded me that I should keep the blog going etc.

RRC Composting Facility in McLaughlan Rd

We alerted Windsor Hills Orelia residents to the proposal for the Rivers Regional Council (RRC) to build a composting facility in McLaughlan Road Kwinana some 750 metres from the residential area.

A meeting was on held on Monday night to hear the proposal first hand from the proponent. People well and truly expressed their views that this composting facility is not wanted.

This community is outraged that waste from 7 other councils is going to be dumped in Kwinana for processing and they will have to live with the consequences. The principles of Environmental Justice are once again being ignored.

Also of major concern is the potential impact on the Spectacles Wetlands just over the road from the proposed site.

We learned that the Proposal has already been advertised by the EPA to be assessed at a ARI level (assessment on referral information) , absolute madness given the history of the SMRC composting facility. So the objective is to have this proposal assessed at at least PER level (Public Environmental Review) or higher.

The Kwinana Council is so far remaining publicly silent on the issue, but they probably should because in my view they seem to have a huge conflict of interest on the issue - How can the TOK continue support the SMRC Canning Vale facility at the detriment of local residents and support the construction of a SMRC facilty in Millar Road - while opposing this facilty in McLaghlain Road proposal?

The battle has just begun.

Is our Premier a hypocrite?

Our Premier Colin Barnet in 2004 gave this (below) grievance speech on Kwinana pollution to the parliament.

Now Colin Barnett is denying the people of Kwinana justice in knowing what is in the air they breath.

MR C.J. BARNETT (Cottesloe - Leader of the Opposition) [9.37 am]: My grievance is to the Minister for the Environment. I imagine that the Minister for the Environment is probably thinking that it is a bit unfair that I would raise with her something about energy. The reason I am directing this grievance to the Minister for the Environment is that I am really asking her what her position is on a major environmental issue - that is, air quality above Perth - and particularly on the impact of the Kwinana industrial area on the neighbouring communities of Hope Valley and Wattleup and on the air quality of the broad southern corridor. Kwinana is our most important industrial area; there is no doubt about that. However, an air quality issue has gradually developed over the past 40 years in Kwinana. As urban growth has continued in the southern corridor, that problem has become more acute. The previous coalition Government recognised the problems, in particular for Hope Valley and Wattleup, and started a very difficult process of essentially relocating and closing down communities. That is very hard to do and will probably take a generation to ultimately achieve. However, there is a public health issue. In the past couple of days it has emerged publicly that the energy policy of this State is a complete failure. That is not the main point of my grievance. This State is going back 40 years to import oil and burn it in Kwinana for power generation. Economically, it is a backward step. For a State with well over 100 years of proven gas and coal reserves to be reverting to importing 25 000 tonnes of oil at approximately $800 a tonne is economically absolutely incompetent.

I could have an argument, as I did on ABC radio this morning, with the Minister for Energy about gas pipelines and the like. However, the point I raise today is the environmental impact. A decision was made late in the term of the previous Government, when I was the Minister for Energy, to proceed with new combined cycle gas-powered generation at Kwinana. That decision was followed through by this Government, and the Cockburn 1 plant, at a cost of some $250 million, is now operating. That is clean, efficient power generation using natural gas - that is great - and there are prospects to expand that. Part of that decision, from a government policy point of view, was that that would not only add to power generation on the south west grid, but also the burning of coal in Kwinana would cease. Our coal is relatively clean. Coal still forms the major fuel for power generation on the south west grid. It accounts for in excess of 60 per cent of generation, and it will have an ongoing permanent role. However, coal produces high levels of emissions compared with natural gas. It is logical for the long-term issue of air quality to ensure that coal burning for power generation is not located in the urban area. Coal has a permanent future, but it needs to be based essentially around Collie, where there is not such a congregation of population and there is not the environmental impact.

In fact, it was an environmental condition in the approval process that coal burning would stop in Kwinana in 2003 when the new gas-powered generation unit came on stream. The new gas plant is operating, and that is good, but what I find tragic is that, as a consequence of the incompetence of the Minister for Energy, coal will continue to be burnt in the old Kwinana power plant and, indeed, about $5 million will be spent on that Kwinana plant to reconvert some of it so that it can go back to burning oil. I do not blame the Minister for the Environment for that; I blame the Minister for Energy.

Let us look at it. Apart from bad economic and bad power generation management, there is a significant environmental impact when gas is burnt instead of coal for power generation. Gas produces about half the emissions, particularly greenhouse gas emissions, than does coal; coal produces twice the number of emissions than does gas. Burning oil produces 25 per cent more emissions than are produced from burning natural gas. Therefore, we will be contributing more to greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, with some of the industrial development in the area, we will be adding to pollutants of greater concern, particularly nitric oxides and sulfur oxides.

I relate this to an earlier decision of this Government, of which it is probably very proud, to scale up the HIsmelt project in Kwinana. However, the HIsmelt project of Hamersley Iron Pty Ltd and Rio Tinto Ltd is a result of their processing obligations under state agreement Acts for mining iron ore. It was always envisaged that iron ore processing would take place in the Pilbara, or perhaps, as a compromise, in the mid west. I believe this Government made a very short-sighted decision when it agreed to put the HIsmelt project into Kwinana. I will tell the House why. The HIsmelt project in Kwinana uses huge amounts of power and massive amounts of water. Yes, the water may be recycled, but one could argue that that water should be recycled and used broadly across the urban area. It is a huge drain on energy and water resources. However, the HIsmelt project will produce some 1 500 tonnes of emissions a year.

I mention that because this Government is at pains to justify, in part, its southern rail project on the basis that it will improve the environment. This Government and the Minister for Planning and Infrastructure argue that the rail link will save 96 tonnes of emissions. That is why I have raised this grievance with the Minister for the Environment. The rail project may save 96 tonnes of emissions, but the HIsmelt project alone puts 1 500 tonnes of emissions into that area. That swamps by a factor of 15 000 per cent the impact of the railway. Coupled with that, coal continues to be burnt, and now oil will be burnt in Kwinana.

Perhaps I addressed this grievance to the minister a little unfairly. However, I want to know where the Minister for the Environment is on the big issues; and in this case, on the big issue of air quality over Kwinana and the southern suburbs.

Perhaps Mr. Premier YOU can now do the right thing and have the DEC appropriately carry out Kwinana Air Toxics Study, but what industry wants....

Health Department Joins In The Campaign To Mislead

Yes our state Health Department are also once again attempting to mislead this community by claiming "the most recent report indicates there is no increase in cancer above the normal background levels in communities south of the river".

What The?

Are our health department saying that Kwinana no longer has an excess of cancer higher than Perth on average?

Are our health department saying that Kwinana no longer has an excess of cancer higher than Australia on average?

Are the health department saying that the excess of cancer in Kwinana has gone?

Of course not!

So just what are the Department of Health WA saying?

DEC Continues To Mislead The Community

The Department of Environment and Conservation continues to mislead the Kwinana Community over air monitoring of air toxics in the Kwinana Airshed.

The DEC has cut the planned monitoring of air toxics in Kwinana by claiming that Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC's) and Ammonia have been monitored for 2 years and no problem was found therefore no further monitoring is required.

Trouble is the DEC have admitted on more than one occasion at air study steering group meeting that the above statement is false because the results of the monitoring that was carried out CANNOT BE USED TO MAKE THE CLAIM THAT AIR QUALITY IN KWINANA IS OK.

We have also proven beyond all doubt that the monitoring carried out cannot be used to make any such claims. For example the main monitor used for monitoring Ammonia was situated upwind of the two major Ammonia emitters.

So:

Why is the DEC still misleading the Kwinana Community?

Why have the DEC cut monitoring of the area which houses the States largest polluting mix of industries?

Just who is protecting the community and workers?

One of the many Smorgan Steel Kwinana Fires

Just who is protecting the community and workers? It certainly isn't our Government Authorities/Regulators.
.
As reported in this weeks Sound Telegraph a worker was hospitalised after an industrial accident in at Onesteel (formerly Smorgan Steel) in Kwinana last Thursday.
.
According to the Telegraph "
FESA issued a statement ON BEHALF OF THE COMPANY and said there were 2 explosions about 10:50 am". So why is FESA is now speaking on behalf of Industry?
.
"The worker was believed to be in Royal Perth Hospital with burns to 40% of his body".

.
This operation has a long poor history. This is an excerpt from a media release I wrote in June 2007 after yet another fire at the plant (There are many more examples):
"The DEC Kwinana had clear warning signs about Smorgon Steel over the past few months with complaints of explosions and pollution fallout. The DEC as usual basically ignored these complaints and warning signs with one DEC officer saying there wasn't a problem with Smorgan Steel.

Smorgan Steel can also be remembered for the Bassendean scrap yard fire in December 2004, where premier Geoff Gallop promised an inquiry into scrap yards. Smorgan can also be remembered for the Kewdale scrap yard fire of March 2005.

We attended a community meeting with Smorgan Steel on 16th March 2005, where we expressed concern about the possibility of a Bassendean type fire at the Kwinana site.

Smorgan Steel, the DEC and the Town of Kwinana have made many assurances to this community about this plant, but today we realise how worthless those assurances were.

We call on the authorities to withdraw Smorgan Steel's licenses to operate until they can prove beyond all doubt that their operation is safe".
FESA stood up in a community-industry meeting and went to bat for the company and claimed what a wonderfull job they were doing and how safe it was... Just 24 hours later the place was burning again.
.
And now serious questions need to be asked of our regulators/authorities - While I do not now the full details of this accident, I believe it likely that it was preventable...
.
We have warned the regulators about, what we believed were, very dodgy goings on at this site for years, we have warned of the explosions, we have warned of the fires, we have warned of the risk to the community and we have warned of the risk to workers because of questionable practices, but of course our regulators once again seemed more interested in protecting industry at any cost!
.
Do departments like DOCEP (now DMP), DEC, FESA and Worksafe actually talk to each other? or is it as it seems that they are all the same - cover up to protect industry at any cost?
.
We now demand a full inquiry and number one should be why didn't the regulators/authorities listen and act on complaints and concerns? Before someone was seriously hurt.
.
How do authorities actually sleep at night? - In my view they should be charged with criminal negligence.
.
Incompetent/Corrupt or both?
.
Thoughts and wishes go to the injured worker and his family.

Technical Clitch with Poll

The poll - Is the DEC incompetent, corrupt or both has been removed due to site technical problems. It stopped counting and in the end would not display.

It was obvious that most people who voted thought the DEC was both incompetent and corrupt.

Maybe we will rerun the poll when the site fixes the glitch?

Kwinana Intermodal

Cockburn Cement

We didn't want it, that doesn't mean someone else should cop it...

The government is planning a huge Intermodal freight terminal 3 times the size of Kewdale. The preferred option has recently been released and is open for public comment.

As I blogged here, then Government Minister Fran Logan wanted to dump the
Intermodal out of his electorate and in between my house and some of the states major hazardous industry.

The new Governments preferred option is just south of Cockburn Cement, right next to many residents and new residential areas. The impacts on these communities will be massive, the truck movement along Russell Road will increase to 7778
a day right through a residential suburb. Will Governments ever learn?

The thing here is; the Government resumed (instigated by a previous Liberal Govt) residents land for facilities like this (now known as Latitude 32), but it seems Landcorp is more interested in selling the land more suitable for this proposal to industry and making money.

We also know that Minister Simon O'Brien wants Fremantle Ports as a whole moved to Kwinana.

If this
Intermodal has to happen, which it seems it does, then it should be located further south, near Rowley Road where the impacts will not be so great.

The closing period for submissions has been extended to Friday 27th February.

Thursday 19 February 2009

We have the right to know

Flare - BP Kwinana

For many years, (well over 15), communities around the Kwinana Industrial area have been calling for an early warning system in
Kwinana, to alert residents should something go wrong in any of Kwinana's major hazardous industry that could possibly pose a threat to nearby residents.

We recently ignited that call again and here is the story: As reported - 'Call for red alert strategy' in the Kwinana Courier 2 weeks ago:

"INDUSTRY and government regulators are being called to task after it was revealed this week there is currently no emergency communication system in place to notify the community of risk from a major emergency on the Kwinana Industrial strip. Kwinana Progress Association president Steve Hesse said the community had demanded such an alert in the past and it had been a concern for many years because of the hazards and incidents that had occurred. We have a right to know if something goes wrong, he said. Mr Hesse wanted to know why the regulatory authorities had not done anything about an alert system".
As reported - 'Ministers blocked WA warning system on Perthnow and in the Australian yesterday:- it seems we are not there yet and it lies at the federal governments feet. We still wait impatiently.

DEC culls Kwinana Air Pollution Study

After sitting on a so-called 'steering committee' for the DEC 's Kwinana air toxics study, allegedly providing advise to the DEC on where to locate monitors and what pollutants of concern are to be monitored, we are now told;

Due to DEC funding cuts the measuring of pollutants in the Kwinana airshed will not go ahead as discussed, planned and agreed.

The DEC's air toxic study (renamed air quality study to appease Kwinana industry) was to monitor pollutants of concern in Kwinana residential areas, but the DEC now claim that due to cuts in funding they HAVE DECIDED not to monitor for many hazardous pollutants such as VOC's, eg. Benzine and Ammonia.

The State Government are potentially playing with people's lives by not monitoring for these highly toxic and in many cases carcinogenic compounds. Kwinana has the largest mix of polluting industry in the state.

This is a disgrace - We have a right to know what is in the air we breathe.

Update: Please feel free to vote on my poll on the right of this page.

DEC found to have failed again and again and again...

As the Sunday Times reported 'Alcoa let of DEC hook', The state ombudsman found the Department of Environment and Conservation - DEC had failed to properly respond to pollution and health problems in communities near the Wagerup refinery.

This is not the first time the DEC which is meant to be WA's environmental policeman has been found to have failed, some that come to mind are Omex, Bellevue, Brookdale, Kwinana, Cockburn Cement, Kalgoorlie, Esperance etc.

What we need to know is when are our politicians going to do something about it? It would seem that this must be the way they want the DEC to be, because that is how industry want it to be and after all industry call the shots.

When DEC officers (the environmental police) publicly claim that "we have and will maintain a good relationship with Kwinana Industry" its pretty obvious that something is horribly wrong.

Incompetence/Corruption or both?

DEC causes Child Health Study to be postponed

The Kwinana Children's respiratory health study has been postponed due to DEC not having air monitors available.

The study will not now commence in March as planned because the DEC cannot organise air monitoring in time.

This is despite the DEC sitting on the steering committee for the study and knowing full well that air monitoring would be an integral part of the study.

Also the monitoring will consist of only one single monitor in one single location in Kwinana and this is meant to be representative of all Kwinana schools.

This is alarming, especially when you see
stories like this from the US.

Unbelievable... One really has to wonder if this is just another Government/Industry organised cover up?

Bushfire Appeal

It's not very often you will see me promoting anything to do with a Corporate Industrial Giant, especially one's like Wesfarmers who as I have blogged before don't care that much about me and my family and neighbours...

Infact I am usually critical of some 'donations big industry make - because it is usually all about buying support from some of the community... But this is different and these people need all the help they can get.

Wesfarmers have been behind the Victorian Bushfire Appeals and as explained here and here:

"Coles to donate this Friday’s profits to Victorian Bushfire Appeal Fund
Coles will donate this Friday’s (13 Feb) profits from its 750 stores nationally to the Government’s Bushfire Appeal Fund in partnership with the Red Cross.
Customers will also be able to donate to the Victorian Bushfire Appeal Fund at all Coles stores. Donations can be made at all Coles supermarket checkouts from today".
So if you have shopping to do later in the week please seriously consider shopping at Coles on Friday.
